Monday began the hurricane season and right on schedule a system formed in the Gulf of Mexico that could potentially strengthen and strike the coast of Texas.

Tropical Storm Cristobal became the third named storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season when it formed in the gulf Tuesday afternoon. As of Wednesday morning, Cristobal was making landfall near Tabasco and Campeche in Mexico with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph.

Gonzales County Judge Patrick Davis on Tuesday said he was keeping an eye on the storm.

“We’re still monitoring it,” he said. “We’re expecting it to start moving north but we have no idea which way it’s going to go.”

He said the county has gone through its annual hurricane preparedness training and is set for what is predicted to be a very busy Atlantic hurricane season. The formation of Cristobal was the earliest a C-named storm has formed on record. The hurricane season runs to Nov. 1.

Davis said the county is not in a hurricane evacuation area and is a pass-through county. He said the hardest part is keeping traffic moving through as many people fleeing the coast feel they have gone far enough by the time the get here.

“We try to keep them moving further north,” he said.
