Inexperienced Mustangs run-ruled

LULING — The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs traveled to Luling after inclement weather forced the game to be moved from Nixon as they lost to the Lady Eagles 15-0 after three innings.

Errors filled up the scoresheet as Luling scored nine runs in the first with two errors and six in the second with four errors to get to that 15 runs.

“Making routine throws was a struggle,” Nixon-Smiley head coach James Watkins said. “Also, being inexperienced. Hopefully they can grow and continue to learn and improve year-to-year.”

The ball club that includes seven freshmen also struggled at the plate as Chaelee Mejia was the lone hitter for the Lady Mustangs. She finished the game 1-of-2 with a single and a stolen base. Her second at-bat was a line drive that was caught by Luling’s second baseman Lynnse Caraway.

“[Mejia is] a great hitter,” Watkins said, “has been a great hitter for us all year.”

Unfortunately for Nixon-Smiley, only three batters made it on base, with Mejia’s hit and two other batters reaching on a hit by a pitch and a walk.

Nixon-Smiley took on Stockdale yesterday, losing the game 17-2. They host Yoakum tonight with first pitch scheduled at 4:30 p.m.
