James Max Carleton, 81, of Gonzales, Teas formerly of Brossard, La., passed away Friday, April 12. James was born on base in Ft. Sam Houston, Texas to James Holbert Carleton and Elsie M. Schurig Carleton. James honorably served his country in the USAF where he had been stationed at Lowry AFB Strategic Air Command for four years during the Cold War and Pease AFB in New Hampshire where he was ultimately discharged after having served five years.

James was a true renaissance man, a man who was very clever, held a vast knowledge of many subjects and was multitalented. He was a sweet man, a kind man and a generous man. He loved to tell jokes, sometimes the same joke multiple times but each time he still got laughs. James was a sociable man who made friends easily.

Having lived in Louisiana, James enjoyed the people and the culture. His favorite TV show was “Swamp People” and his other favorite “Off the Grid.” Although James celebrated friendships all over the country, he liked the idea of living off the land, secluded and dependent upon one’s ability to survive. He enjoyed snorkeling and diving and had been a member of a Neptune Diving Club and he was a lifetime member of the NRA. James appreciated his feline companions and visits from friends.

James is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Bill Storey of Austin and his nieces, nephews and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his Parents.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18 in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Clint Lowery officiating. Memorials may be made to the Gonzales County Veterans Memorial Association. Friends may leave their condolences to the family by visiting www.seydlerhillfuneralhome.com.
