James W. “Pap” Smith

Bro. James W. “Pap” Smith was born August 18 1936 to Samuel and Alflorida Smith. James was the youngest of four children. James accepted Christ at an early age and joined Evans Chapel UMC and was baptized in Elm Slough Community. He served in the youth choir and Methodist youth fellowship. He was a faithful member until his health failed him.

Pap, as he was called by friends and family, attended Elm Slough Elementary school and graduated from Edwards High School May 1955. Pap served in the U.S. Army for three years. He was a mechanic, truck driver and bus driver for 30 years. He was a Gonzales police officer for the City of Gonzales for several years. His memory will forever be cherished by his loving wife Eva D. Smith, three loving sisters: Georgie Allen, Ethel Bouldin and Annie Williams, children: Sue Merkel Hill, Sharon Hooks, Larry Seay (Carolyn), Lynn Tovar (David), Rev. James E. Smith and Angela Nicole Smith.

Other children: Daniell Brown (Rickey), Willie Haynes (Ashlein), Samuel Leon Richardson (Daniela), Marvin Lewis (Felicity), Rickey Caldwell (Kironda), Charissi, Shawn, Tiffany Shirlette, Claudia, Cathy, Shirley Ann, Charles, Gary, Anthony Erskin.

Sister-in-law Ella Fay (Joel), Peggy Blake Diane Miller. Brother-in-law Henry (Stella), Gary (Delane), Larry (Shirley).

Nieces: Brenda, Lenda, Rhonda, Flenda, Wenda, Glenda, Trenda, Kenda, Quenda Venda and Avis.

Nephews: Levi Smith Jr, special friend Verda Tealer.

James was preceded in death by both parents, three loving aunts: Mellie Kay, Susie B and Annie Marcellous, two sons Cornel and Daniel Smith and two brothers Samuel Smith and Levi Smith and a host of grand and great-grandchildren.

One of his passions was riding his stud horse on trail rides and parades.

Services Saturday, November 5 at 11 a.m. at Henson Chapel UMC. Buriel Elm Slough.
