Jeannine Marquis Sample

Jeannine Marquis Sample, age 87, of Smiley, Texas, passed away April 4. Jeannine was born in Cuero, Texas on Feb. 28, 1931, as the second of two children born to Charles W. and Jeanette Casal Marquis.

Jeannine graduated from Cuero High School in 1949 where she was an active band member. After graduation, she attended Texas State University. She met the love of her life, Elmo Alex Sample, on a blind date. They fell in love and married on Oct. 7, 1951. One year later, their first child, Charlotte Jean, was born. Later, John Alex came in 1954 and eight years after, in 1962, came Merilyn Gay.

Jeannine is survived by her loving family: husband, Elmo Sample; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Trey McMahon of Nixon; son, John Sample of Gonzales; son-in-law, Kennon Cantley of Smiley; grandson, Joseph (Joey) and Kellie Taylor of San Antonio and great-granddaughters, Ella and Olivia; grandson, Chad and Brittany Taylor of San Antonio and great-grandson, Brooks; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Merilyn Cantley; brother and sister-in-law, Charles “Chick” and Mary Lou Marquis; brothers-in-law and sisters-in law: Carl and Annette Sample and Horace and Bernice Sample.

The visitation will be held Saturday, April 7, from 9-10 a.m. at Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon. The service will then follow with The Rev. Harlene Sadler officiating. Interment will follow in Bundick Cemetery in Smiley.
