Junior high knocks off Columbus, loses to Cuero

The Gonzales Junior High teams traveled last week for their football games, with the 7A and 8A teams taking on Columbus and the 7B and 8B teams facing Cuero.
7A team defeats Columbus 42-14
Carlos Verastegui had a great night running the football. Carlos had a six-yard, 72-yard, 48-yard and a 26-yard touchdown run. He also scored on a two-point conversion. Jerin Johnson completed a 51-yard pass to Mason Gonzales for a touchdown. Derrick Garza and Joe Canales both scored a two-point conversion. Jerin Johnson also scored a four-yard touchdown. The 7A team remains undefeated at 5-0, 2-0 in district play.
7B loses 16-6 to Cuero
The 7B team lost at Cuero 16-6, with Dalton Pape named offensive player of the game and Angel Martinez and Christian Camarillo named defensive players of the game. Martinez had an interception for a touchdown while Camarillo also came away with a pick.
8A team routs Columbus 44-10
Breck Eleby was the offensive player of the game for Gonzales’ 44-10 win over Columbus. Elsby scored on a 46-yard pass and a 38-yard pass from Brett Breitschopf. Eleby also racked up a 56-yard run and a 75-yard touchdown run. Cesar Matamoros scored on a 58-yard power run and two two-point conversions. Brady Barfield had two amazing catches from Breitschopf. Barfield scored on a 28-yard pass and a two-point conversion. Jeramiah Hastings scored on a two-point conversion. Hastings also deflected the ball on a pass from the Cardinals to allow Jose Ortega to intercept the ball. Hastings also recovered a fumble. To seal the win, Eleby intercepted the ball for a 42-yard return. Coaches also praised the offensive line for their outstanding blocking. The Apaches are 2-0 in district play.
8B dropped 20-0 against Cuero
The 8B team lost to Cuero 20-0. Kyle Ellison was praised for his rushing ability as he was named offensive player of the game. Meanwhile, defensive player of the game was Weston Pape.
