Lady Apaches dropped in three

GONZALES — The Lady Apaches couldn’t get much going Friday night as they lost to the La Vernia Lady Bears in three sets, (25-7, 25-8, 25-6). Without Sheridan Tate in the lineup as the main setter due to a broken arm, Gonzales struggled as head coach Bernice Voigt was forced to add two freshmen to the floor.

“We’re at a deficit right now with Sheridan being out with a broken arm and putting two freshmen in to set,” Voigt explained. “I thought they did a good job though.”

La Vernia scored every which way, getting kills, blocking any attempted attacks from Gonzales and then scoring on aces. Gonzales’ lone lead of the night came in the first set when Rachel Staggs had two straight aces to give the Lady Apaches a 3-1 lead. La Vernia would go on a 12-0 run before Gonzales grabbed another point.

Voigt cited a lack of communication as a problem in Friday’s game and that it’s just going to take a bit more playing as the new players get used to varsity action.

“We didn’t get one of them until yesterday,” she said. “[Kylie] Allen didn’t come in until yesterday, she was out with a cornea scratch. So we just threw her in cold turkey tonight. I thought she did fine.”

Overall, Voigt did see some positive notes, noting that the Lady Apaches got La Vernia “out of system a couple of times.”

“We just didn’t do it enough,” she said. “You got to build on what we did right, remember that part of it and keep fighting through the rest of it.”

Gonzales travels to Wimberley to take on the Texans tonight at 6 p.m.
