Lady Cardinals split games in holiday-break tournament

FALLS CITY — Shiner St. Paul traveled to Falls City for a two-day tournament after Christmas, winning two games and losing one in the process.
Shiner St. Paul 49, St. Anthony 16
The Lady Cardinals opened tournament play with a dominating 49-16 victory over St. Anthony on Friday, Dec. 28. Gracey Novosad outscored St. Anthony herself with an impressive 20 points, three rebounds, five assists and seven steals. She shot 57.1 percent from the field. Grace Irvin had a double-double, scoring 13 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, one block and five steals. Riley Johnson added eight points, one rebound, one assist and two steals to the stat book. The team outrebounded St. Anthony 37 to 26.
Falls City 38, St. Paul 28
Shiner St. Paul fell to the hosts 38-28 as the Lady Cardinals shot just 20 percent from the field. Gracey Novosad was the leading scorer with eight points, six rebounds, one assist and four steals. Grace Irvin added six points while Riley Johnson had five, Lauryn Kubenka and Christine Wagner each and four and Danni Blair had one point.
St. Paul 47, Shiner High 22
The Lady Cardinals finished out their tournament with a victory over the Shiner Lady Comanches 47-22. Grace Irvin and Gracey Novosad each had a team-leading 14 points. Christine Wagner had 10 points, eight rebounds and six steals in the game. Riley Johnson added seven points while Trinity Garza had two points.
The Lady Cardinals travel to Bryan St. Joseph for a non-district game on Friday, Jan. 4, with varsity girls tipping off at 6:15 p.m. On Tuesday, they host their rivals, Hallettsville Sacred Heart, with a game set at 6 p.m.
