Lady Mustangs downed by Marion

NIXON — It was a tough night for the Lady Mustangs (0-6) as they hosted Marion (5-1) for District 27-3A match, losing the bout 57-20.
After going down 11-4 in the first quarter, Nixon-Smiley’s Elizabeth Vazquez drained a three, via an assist by Maggie Mendez, to cut the lead to four. That would be the closest the Lady Mustangs came within the top-district contenders as Marion finished the quarter on an 18-2 run to go up 29-9. Marion continued to add to their lead, outscoring Nixon-Smiley 14-3 in the third quarter then 14-8 in the fourth for the 37-point victory.
Vazquez led the team in scoring with six points, adding one assist and seven rebounds to the stat sheet. Katy Tschoepe had five points, three rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Chaelee Mejia had four points, one assist, three rebounds and four steals. Mendez added three points, one assist, one rebound and one steal.
The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs search for their first district win of the season Friday as they take on Hallettsville (4-2) on the road. They then host Schulenburg (5-1) on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
