Local tourism committee looking out for new events

GONZALES — The first order of business for the Gonzales Convention and Visitor Bureau Committee was to accept the resignation of newly-hired Tourism Director Clint Hille from his position on the committee.

Hille did not make a statement, he simply turned in a short letter to GCVB Chairperson Barbara Crozier, in which he said, "I have enjoyed working with you and the rest of the board and look forward to continuing to work with you through my new position as Tourism Director."

Other action items included discussion about funding for the upcoming Central Texas Independent Cattlemen's Association sale event at JB Wells Park. Billy Bob Low spoke to the GCVB committee as a supplement to his request for help with funding the event. According to Low, the event has gotten so big the organization has had to rent $4,500 worth of gates to be able to hold the event and has built a cattle chute at the location.

Low, on behalf on the organization, asked for $2,500 to help with funding. In 2016, the event received $2,000. This year the GCVB awarded the group $1,500, in an effort to still help and support the event, but to "wean them off" to be self-supporting, which will save GCVB money for future new events.

The committee then discussed brochures and learning opportunities for the community; and elected officers for the 2017-2018 year. Officers are: Chairman Barbara Crozier, Vice Chair Dawn O'Donnell; Parliamentarian Annie Covert; and Secretary Holly Danz.
