Lula Oreta Sandlin Vaughan went home to be with her Lord Dec. 23. She was born to James Arthur Sandlin and Mollie Belle Brisco Sandlin on Dec. 6, 1926 in DeWitt County, TX. She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at the age of 13 years and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, Gonzales, TX. After graduating from Gonzales High School in 1945, she was married to Cecil Bernard Vaughan on December 7. He preceded her in death on March 31, 1964. To this union was born a son, Rodney Erroll Vaughan of Gonzales and two daughters: Shirley Ann Vaughan Blundell of Dickinson and Kathy Lane Vaughan Taylor of League City.

She worked as a bookkeeper and secretary for many years: almost 19 years with the Department of Agriculture in Gonzales County as Program Assistant and then 7 years as receptionist/secretary at First Baptist Church in Gonzales. She also taught Sunday School for many years, worked in Vacation Bible School, promoted missions within the church, and cared deeply for others.

Oreta was preceded in death by her husband and parents; three brothers: Norbert Weldon Sandlin of Kingsbury, Walter William Sandlin of Ector and James Arthur Sandlin Jr. of Gonzales County and one sister Annie Lue Sandlin of Gonzales County.

She is survived by her three children; six granddaughters: Lori Ann Blundell Jones (Curtis) of Pearland, Shelda Kay Blundell Trevino of Katy, Brenda Rene’ Vaughan and Rebecca Lynn Vaughan of Carrollton, Kimberly Elaine Vaughan Wiley (Michael) of Belton and Stefani Alane Taylor of Sherman Oaks, California; seven great-grandchildren: Jarrod Walker (Kylie) U.S. Army, Braeden Walker and Morgan Jones of Pearland, Marisa and Peyton Trevino of Katy and Alexander and Courtney Wiley of Belton; three nieces: Cynthia Sandlin Brown (Bobby) of Porter, Carolyn Sandlin Davis (Craig) of Bellville and Donna Sandlin Simms (Matthew) of Ector and many cousins.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Cecil Deadman officiating. Interment will be held in the Saturn Cemetery. Pallbearers include Jarrod Walker, Braeden Walker, Michael Wiley, Alexander Wiley, David Vaughan and Garlan Blundell. Honorary pallbearers include Jene Dryer, Bill DeBerry, Charles Rasmussen, Ferd West, Bobby O’Neal and James Brisco. Memorials may be made to Eastside Baptist Church or The American Cancer Society.
