Gonzales County schools receive first official A-F reports

Editor’s Note: Texas school districts received their first official grades on press time, Wednesday. Look for next week’s edition of the Inquirer for further analysis and reactions of the A-F rating system.

Gonzales County school districts received their first official grades Wednesday that show their performance on a scale from A through F. The ratings are the first grades issued since the 84th Legislature passed House Bill 2804, changing the Texas school accounting system to A-F replacing of the pass/fail rating system.
Gonzales ISD received an F in overall performance, scoring 59 out of 100. Breaking down their three different domains, GISD received a D (63) in Student Achievement, a C (70) in School Progress and an F (34) in Closing the Gaps.
According to the txschools.org website, “student achievement shows how much students know and are able to do at the end of the school year.” School progress “shows how students perform over time and how that growth compares to similar schools.” The Closing the Gaps domain “tells us how well different populations of students in a district are performing.
The website also breaks down the district by campuses. Gonzales Junior High has the highest overall score, an 82 (B).
GISD campuses had the following scores (all scores out of 100):

  • Gonzales High: 58
  • Gonzales Junior High: 82
  • Gonzales North Avenue: 74
  • Gonzales Elementary: 56
  • Gonzales East Avenue: 56
  • Gonzales Primary Academy: 56

Compared to districts around the area, Cuero ISD received a C (74) overall and Navarro ISD received a B (86) overall. Robstown ISD, a district with similar student enrollment, scored a C (74).
In the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST), a rating system used to hold public schools “accountable for the quality of their financial management practices,” according to txschools.org, Gonzales ISD was rated a B, scoring 84 out of 100.
Nixon-Smiley CISD received a B in overall performance, scoring 82 out of 100. NSCISD received a C (75) in Student Achievement, a B (85) in School Progress and a C (74) in Closing the Gaps.
Broken down by campuses, the following were the scores (all out of 100) in Nixon-Smiley:

  • Nixon-Smiley High: 80
  • Nixon-Smiley Middle: 89
  • Nixon-Smiley Elementary: 64

In the FIRST rating, NSCISD scored 100 out of 100.
Waelder ISD received a “met standard” according to the website, scoring 74 out of 100 in overall performance. They were given a “met standard” grade in the three different domains, scoring 60 in Student Achievement, 78 in School Progress and 65 in Closing the Gaps.
In the FIRST rating, Waelder ISD scored 100 out of 100.
