Matthew Atkinson (R)

Incumbent Sheriff Matthew Atkinson is running for re-election this spring and wants your vote. Atkinson cites his record of improving the sheriff’s department the last three years, his personal integrity and the vision he has for the department in the future.

Atkinson is a life-long resident of Gonzales. He lives on the property his ancestors bought in the 1840s with his wife Cheryl and his two sons Ancil and Quinn.

“I was born and raised here, and that is where my values come from,” Atkinson said. “My faith is first for me along with my family. I think have brought integrity to the position of Sheriff thanks to my faith and belief in doing my job honorably every day.”

Atkinson is very proud of his record in office and the conduct of his employees. As sheriff, Atkinson has a long list of accomplishments: passing the Texas Commission on Jail Standards each year in office, reducing operational spending which has allowed the department to come in under budget each year, building strong relationships with all members of county government, creating a Fallen Officers Memorial Scholarship for graduating seniors countywide, increased training for GCSO employees, sponsored trainings involving active shooter incidents and church security issues, added a second K9 narcotics unit to increase drug interdiction efforts and a host of other improvements.

“This is only the beginning and I will work my hardest to ensure the Sheriff’s Office continues to improve and move forward in a positive and pro-active manner,” Atkinson said. “We are going to have to build a new jail in the future, and I would like to be the Sheriff that helps plan and build the facility that should serve Gonzales for the next 40-50 years.

“I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all of the citizens of Gonzales and hope to gain their vote again for Sheriff in 2020.”
