Meals for Vets helps those who serve

GONZALES COUNTY — Meals for Vets (MFV), a program of Honor Veterans Now, reaches veterans all across Texas who are in need of a hot meal a day. MFV provides consistent access to healthy, nutritious meals for veterans under age 60 who served honorably and are struggling financially. MFV partners with Gonzales Veterans Service Officer David B. Tucy, who can assist in referring a veteran to receive meals.

Honor Veterans Now was founded by Tom Wollny in 2015 after he learned that there were veterans who were going hungry but did not quality for assistance because of their age. The Older Americans Act (OAA) enacted in 1965 allows funding to meal providers, but limits funding meals only to those 60 years of age or older with very limited exceptions. Tom, a Korean War veteran, saw a very real need to fill the gap the OAA left for our younger veterans and HVN came into being. Since then, HVN and Meals for Vets has expanded throughout Texas and has been blessed to be able to provide over 100,000 meals to veterans in need who otherwise would not know when their next meal would be.

“We are very honored that the Texan Veterans Commission (TVC) has selected HVN for funding to provide meals for our younger veterans. This is our initial award and we anticipate future funding as we grow to serve veterans throughout Texas,” Wollny stated when talking about HVN and serving our veterans.

“This program is supported by a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance. The Fund for Veterans’ Assistance provides grants to organizations serving veterans and their families.”
