Memo’s Hangout blends eclectic charm with classic eats

Blink while driving down Saint Louis St. and you might just miss it, but this soon-to-open little bar might just have the biggest and best chicken wings in Gonzales. Memo’s Hangout, opening Friday, Aug. 9, is the newest bar and grill in town and the latest business venture of Gonzales-native Jason Gonzales.

Named for his late grandmother, Gonzales hopes Memo’s fosters a fun and inclusive atmosphere in her honor.

“We just want it to be a everybody welcome, good vibe kind of thing,” Gonzales said. “We’ll be playing a wide variety of music. I know some bars just play country or Tejano, but we want to mix up a little bit.”

The bar will, of course, be fully stocked but Memo’s also features an extensive menu of appetizers, burgers, sandwiches and most importantly chicken wings and tenders.

“We want to specialize in one thing, which is going to be the wings,” Gonzales said. “There’s a lot of variety in the simplicity.”

The bone-in jumbo wings or homestyle breaded tenders come served with fries, ranch or blue cheese dressing and your choice from nine, possibly soon 15, unique sauces. Gonzales said his personal favorite sauce is the garlic parmesan.

All food will be prepped and cooked in an outdoor, food truck style kitchen. Though unlike a food truck, servers will be handling customer orders.

“We’re trying to bring a little Austin vibe, man,” Gonzales said.

Gonzales also hopes Memo’s will borrow the streamlined quickness of food truck service.

“You come in; you get greeted. You sit wherever you like. You just don’t wait, that’s the main thing,” Gonzales said.

Gonzales said he wants to implement a 10 percent off discount for military members and first responders. Memo’s hours are 3 p.m. to 12 a.m. on weeknights and 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. on weekends.

Memo’s Hangout has a ribbon cutting event with the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9 and 30 minutes later they will officially open. The bar is located at 1402 Saint Louis St. Gonzales, Texas 78629.
