GONZALES — A Mississippi man wound up behind bars after authorities said he attacked a woman in the Walmart parking lot and ran from police.

At 3 p.m. Aug. 3, a woman reported to GPD that she had just been assaulted in the Walmart parking lot, and that she had taken a photo of her assailant, Capt. Allen Taylor said. Using the photo, officers were able to find and identify the suspect, identified as Michael Andrew Davenport, 32, of Mississippi, on Cartwheel Drive. However, when officers approached Davenport, he fled on foot, heading north to the Quality Inn hotel. He ran into the hotel’s south side breezeway and then into the north breezeway before locking himself inside a utility room.

Officers eventually removed the door from its hinges and arrested Davenport. He was taken to Gonzales County Jail and charged with aggravated sexual assault and evading arrest.

Taylor said a man driving a blue Nissan Rogue witnessed the incident and reported it to the Walmart manager, who in turn reported it to the police. Taylor is asking the witness to come forward with any information by calling GPD at 830-672-8686.
