Mustangs advance to regional meet

GOLIAD — After completing their events at the area track and field meet last week, three Nixon-Smiley athletes will be headed to the regional at Judson Stadium in Converse this upcoming weekend as they took top-four in the area meet.

Samuel Moore led the group as he took a gold and bronze medal.  Moore’s leap in the long jump of 21 feet, 7 ½ inches was the gold winner. He beat out Hallettsville’s Deondre Adams who had a distance of 21-4 ½. Goliad’s Trevor Parr took third with a leap of 20-11 and Poth’s Caleb Albert took fourth with his distance of 20-9 ½ barely beating out Palacios’ Joseph Rodriguez with his leap of 20-9.

Moore also took third in the high jump with his leap of 6 feet flat. Palacios’ Zachary Seaman took first with his distance of 6-2.02. Poth’s Jake Lamberth took second with his leap of 6-2.01. Devin Hester took eighth in the event with his leap of 5-6.

Hester was able to qualify for the regional meet in two different events. He took second in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 15.78 seconds. He was edged out by Goliad’s Ricky Waer who finished at 14.93. Taking third was Luling’s Brandon Patterson at 16.21 and Goliad’s Steven Koehne took fourth at 16.52.

Hester also grabbed a silver medal in the 300-meter hurdles with his time of 40.31. Waer again took first, this time with a finish at 39.58. Edna’s Landon O’Connor took third with his time of 40.95 and Tidehaven’s Jacob Galvan took fourth with his time of 42.82.

Justice Torres was Nixon-Smiley’s final regional qualifier as he took fourth in the 400-meter run with a time of 50.44. Altair Rice’s Zack Gasca placed first with his time of 48.30, Luling’s Shaft Cubit took second with his time of 49.92 and Vanderbilt Industrial’s Avery Milner took third with his time of 50.29.

Celeste Arriaga competed in multiple events at the meet but wasn’t able to make it to the regional meet. In the 200-meter, she placed seventh with her time of 27.75. Fourth place was Edna’s Crystal Coulter with her time of 27.18. In the long jump, Arriaga took sixth with a distance of 16-1 ½. Palacios’ Lila Filap took fourth with her jump of 16-11 ¾. Arriaga also took sixth in the 400-meter run with her time of 1:08.27. Fourth place finish was Hallettsville’s Kauner Howell who finished at 1:03.54.

Also in the 400-meter race was Yesenia Ochoa who placed seventh with her time of 1:09.69. Ochoa then took seventh in the 800-meter run with her time of 2:48.01. Tidehaven’s Anisa Cornett took fourth with her time of 2:35.26.

In the relays, the boys’ 4x200-meter team of Justice Torres, Jake Torres, Joey Mendez and Joseph Rodriguez placed sixth with their time of 1:36.11. The 4x400-meter team of Devin Hester, Justice Torres, Jake Torres and Joseph Rodriguez placed fifth with their time of 3:32.93, barely edged out by Altair Rice who took third with their time of 3:32.22 and Goliad who placed fourth with their time of 3:32.73.

Nixon-Smiley will send three athletes to the regional meet at Judson Stadium in Converse, with the meet set to take place from April 29-30.
