Mustangs back to 6-6 after taking 2 losses

After winning five straight in District 27-3A, the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs have suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since their three-game slide from March 16-23. With two games remaining in the district season, Nixon-Smiley (6-6) find themselves in fifth place, needing to win out for a chance at postseason play.

Xavier Arias took the loss last Friday in a tight 2-0 loss against Marion. Arias pitched six innings, striking out three batters while giving up six hits, one earned run and one walk. Sean Villanueva was the lone hitter, going 1-for-3 with a single.

Hallettsville 9, Nixon-Smiley 2
Nixon-Smiley took a 9-2 loss against Hallettsville, dropping down 6-6 in district play after the game. The Mustangs combined for four hits and four errors in the game, while the Brahmas were active at the plate, scoring nine runs on 10 hits.
Ricky Flores took the loss, pitching three innings while striking out two batters and giving up four hits, two earned runs and four hit batters. Colby Newman came in the fourth inning, pitching 2 1/3 innings, striking out one batter and giving up three earned runs, four hits and two walks. Sean Villanueva came in the sixth, pitching two innings, striking out one batter while giving up two earned runs, two hits, two walks and one hit batter.
At the plate, Villanueva went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Newman went 1-for-1 with three stolen bases, two walks and a run. Devin Hester went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and a run.

The Mustangs (6-6), now fifth place in District 27-3A), fall behind the Luling Eagles (7-5) and Yoakum Bulldogs (7-5). Nixon-Smiley takes on Schulenburg (3-9) on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. They end their district schedule at home against UC Randolph (1-11) on April 24. The Mustangs run-ruled both teams in their previous matchups.
Luling finishes their district against Yoakum on April 20 and against Marion (11-1) on April 24. After Yoakum’s game against Luling, they host Stockdale (2-10) on April 24.
