Mustangs claim consolation prize at tournament

POTEET — Nixon-Smiley traveled to Poteet for a three-day tournament, winning the consolation bracket after a tough start.

Crystal City 45, Nixon-Smiley 41

Nixon-Smiley opened their tournament with a four-point loss to Crystal City, after blowing a first-half lead. Up 12-7, the Mustangs allowed Crystal City to end the first half with a one-point deficit. Nixon-Smiley then ended the third quarter down four before matching Crystal City’s 12 points in the fourth to lose by that margin. Treon Fatheree led the team with 16 points. Jose Melendez had 10. Jordan Lopez added seven.

Navarro 38, Nixon-Smiley 32

The Mustangs again gave up a lead, losing to the Geronimo Navarro Panthers 38-32 for their second loss of the tournament. Up 25-23 by the end of the third, the Panthers outscored Nixon-Smiley 15-7 in the fourth to win by six. Jordan Lopez led the team in scoring with 12 points. Treon Fatheree had eight while Jordan Van Auken added six points.

Poth 65, Nixon-Smiley 55

Nixon-Smiley were taken down by their district rivals in the tournament, 65-55. Poth outscored the Mustangs 21-13 in the first quarter, then had a 14-14 quarter before Nixon-Smiley took the 14-13 advantage in the third frame. The Pirates outscored the Mustangs 17-14 in the fourth. Jordan Van Auken and Treon Fatheree both had 16 points. Jose Melendez added eight points.

Nixon-Smiley 65, Poteet 40

The Mustangs finally got their first win of the tournament with a 65-40 against the hosts. Down 10-6 after the first, Nixon-Smiley would outscore Poteet 19-11, 23-13 and 17-6 to win by 25. Jordan Van Auken led the team with 22 points. Treon Fatheree added 15 while Trey Mejia had nine points.

Nixon-Smiley 50, Hondo 49

The Mustangs finished their tournament bid with a consolation championship after defeating Hondo 50-49. Jordan Lopez and Jordan Van Auken had 18 points while Rodrigo Acevedo had four. Van Auken was named to the all-tournament team.
