Mustangs clinch second after district win

STOCKDALE — Nixon-Smiley (5-5, 3-2) took down their rivals in Stockdale (5-5, 3-2) to jump them in the district standings as runner-ups in Friday’s game against the Brahmas.

The Mustangs, up 28-14, gave up two touchdowns to the Brahmas in the fourth quarter, but a failed two-point conversion was the difference as Nixon-Smiley won their final regular season game 28-27.

Leading the way on offense was quarterback Colby Newman who was 5-of-8 for 71 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed 17 times for 119 and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Joey Mendez had 22 rushes for 81 yards and a score. Mendez also caught two balls for 24 yards and a touchdown. Devin Hester caught one for 40 yards and a score.

Elix Carillo got a sack Friday night along with seven solo tackles and three assisted. Mendez had six solos and five assisted. Dylan Maldonado had seven solo and five assisted.

The Mustangs will take on Banquete (8-2, 3-2) on Thursday at Karnes City in the bi-district round of the playoffs. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
