Mustangs dominate Sacred Heart

NIXON — The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs shot out to a 37-0 lead before giving up their first score of the night in the fourth quarter, ultimately taking down Hallettsville Sacred Heart 43-14.

Leading the way was Colby Newman who had 17 rushes for 151 yards and a touchdown. He was also 3-of-9 for 78 yards passing and two touchdowns, with Devin Hester catching one of the touchdowns and Daniel Rodriguez catching the other. Rodriguez ended his night with one catch for that 25-yard score while also rushing five times for 38 yards. Hester had two catches for 53 yards and a touchdown while running the ball four times for 43 yards and a score.

Other rushers include Jason Yell who ran seven times for 36 yards and Chris Brown who ran twice for 10 yards.

Defensively, Hester led the team with three interceptions, including one for a touchdown. Matthew Mills also grabbed two interceptions, one of which he took back for a touchdown. Newman came away with a pick as well. Brown forced a fumble while also accumulating a sack. Yell also forced a fumble.

Nixon-Smiley (2-1) host San Antonio Cole (2-1) this Friday for Homecoming, with kickoff set at 7:30 p.m.
