Mustangs face tough challenge in Sacred Heart

Posted

NIXON — Nixon-Smiley ran away with a win last week playing mostly mistake-free football. Tonight against Hallettsville Sacred Heart, they’ll have to do the same thing.

The Sacred Heart Indians will be another good test for Nixon-Smiley, Mustangs’ head coach Carlton McKinney said, because of their discipline.

“You have to beat them,” McKinney said, meaning Sacred Heart will not beat themselves with mistakes.

Tonight’s game will be “a good barometer of where we are in the season,” McKinney acknowledged. “We really have to be focused and not take plays off. This is a good test for us.”

Sacred Heart is a power team that tends to run the ball about 70% of the time. They’re a team that wants to “control tempo” as McKinney puts it though they will throw the ball as well.

Defensively, the Indians tend to run a similar formation as the Mustangs. They’re main goal is to maintain and control the line of scrimmage as well as keep contain on outside runs.

The key for Nixon-Smiley will be to not only stay discipline but remember to play as well as they did last week and not blow any assignments.

Tonight’s game is at home with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
