Mustangs fall to last-second score

NIXON — A last second touchdown took down the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs as they fell in their final non-district contest of the season, losing to Falls City 38-30.

The teams were back-and-forth in scoring as a Colby Newman touchdown midway through the fourth tied up the game at 30. However, Falls City was able to get a 37-yard touchdown pass with eight seconds left to go up with what would be the final score of 38-30.

Newman led the team in rushing with 30 attempts for 208 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed 2-of-9 passes for 51 yards. Genaro Vasquez rushed 10 times for 90 yards and a score.

The Mustangs totaled 320 yards rushing.

Jason Yell caught a ball for 10 yards and Matt Mills caught another one for 41 yards.

On defense, Daniel Rodriguez grabbed an interception and returned it for 32 yards. He also had nine solo tackles and one assisted. Newman was busy on defense with nine tackles and three assisted.

Nixon-Smiley are on an open week and will begin District 15-3A2 play next Friday.
