Mustangs finish 4th after 2-0 loss

LULING — The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs have a tough task ahead of them as they advance to the playoffs as the District 27-3A fourth-place team following their 2-0 loss to the Luling Eagles on Tuesday. Errors and lack of hitting have been problems all year long and the Mustangs hope they can clean it up for the playoffs.

“We need to play cleaner baseball,” Mustangs head coach San Juan Arias said after the game. “It’s kind of been our problem all year long, just haven’t been able to put a total, clean game together.”

Nixon-Smiley combined for five errors on the field including a potential double-play in the first inning where Luling scored their only two runs.

Starting pitcher for the Mustangs was Sean Villanueva who went 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out four batters. Xavier Arias finished out the game pitching 3.1 innings, allowing three hits while striking out seven batters.

“My two pitchers, Sean and Xavier, they’ve kept us in a lot of ball games,” Arias added. “They got a lot of strikeouts and don’t give up a whole lot of runs. It’s just unfortunate that we struggle defensively and offensively that they don’t get a lot of wins that they deserve.”

At the plate, the Mustangs had just two hits with one other baserunner reaching via error. Two batters reached on balls and another was hit. The Mustangs only had one batter reach third base all game.

“We’ve struggled at the plate all season long,” Arias said. “Our guys have got to have better at-bats. Fortunately, we made the playoffs, hopefully we can string some base hits together and score some runs.”

The Mustangs are set to take on Hallettsville, though specifics on when and where the series will take was unavailable before press time.
