POTH — Nixon-Smiley already clinched at least a share of the District 27-3A title when Poth upset Goliad last week. All the Mustangs needed to do were win one more game to win the championship outright.

But Poth, who was locked in as the third seed, had upset on their mind.

After a tight first quarter with the Mustangs leading the way 19-16. The Pirates then outscored Nixon-Smiley 28-21 to end the half up 44-40. Nixon-Smiley cut the lead to 58-56 and then outscored Poth again in the fourth 18-17, ultimately losing by just one point, 75-74.

The upset loss brought the Mustangs down to 10-2 in district, tying with a Goliad team that beat Karnes City that same night, making Nixon-Smiley and the Goliad Tigers district co-champions.

Treon Fatheree led the team in scoring with 28 points. Sam Moore was right behind with 26. Other scorers include Jordan Van Auken with 11, José Melendez with four, Luis Limon with three and Jordan Lopez with two.

After losing a coin flip, the Mustangs will be coming out of District 27-3A the second seed. Their matchup isn’t set yet as District 28-3A have to settled their seeding. Nixon-Smiley will take on Palacios on Tuesday, Dec. 23 in the bi-district round. They play in Bloomington with tipoff set at 7 p.m.
