Nelwyn Thompson Lewis, 97, of Gonzales, Texas, passed away Thursday, Nov. 28, 2019. She was born Oct. 15, 1922 in Gonzales County to William Oscar (W. O.) Thompson, Sr. and Jodie Caroline Morrow Thompson. She married Samuel Freeman Lewis, Sr. on June 12, 1945 in Gonzales, Texas. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Gonzales.

Nelwyn was reared in Gonzales County; she attended school in the Nickel community before her parents decided to move to Gonzales. She graduated from Gonzales High School. Having been a motivated student, she went on to Mary Hardin Baylor University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. She came back to Gonzales and taught Home Economics in the Gonzales High School for several years until deciding to devote her life as a full-time wife, mother of 3 children, Sunday School teacher and homemaker. As time permitted, she enjoyed oil painting, gardening, ranching and participating in her clubs, the Music Study Club, the Sesame Study Club and the Mother’s Study Club. She also was a board member of the local MHMR.

Nelwyn is survived by her sister Laurel Thompson Ince of Gonzales, her sons, Samuel Freeman Lewis, Jr. and Barbara of Gonzales, David Wynn Lewis and Janie of Montgomery, Texas and Kathryn Lewis of Gonzales. Her grandchildren include Jeremy Wayne Lewis and Cammy of Gonzales, Brian David Lewis and Tamra of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Christopher Lee Lewis and Megan of Lubbock, Texas, Krisleigh Lewis Hoermann and Mark of Sachse, Texas and Skye Alexandra Lewis of Fort Worth, Texas. Her great grandchildren Gracie Marie Lewis, Mackenzie Leigh Lewis, and Collin Freeman Lewis of Lubbock, Texas, Kayden Arlon Hoermann, Makayla Cathlyn Hoermann, and Ava Krisleigh Hoermann of Sachse, Texas. Also surviving are nieces Susan Ince Burns, Damaris Thompson Neelley, Mark Ince, and William Charles Ince. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands Samuel Freeman Lewis, Sr. and Bob Matthews, a brother W. O. Thompson, Jr. (Sonny), nephew Joe Ince and brother-in-law Joe (Pep) Ince.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020 at the First Baptist Church, Gonzales, Texas at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Randell Everett officiating. A reception following the service will be held in the educational building of the church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the scholarship fund at First Baptist Church for children and youth to attend Christian church camps or the Joy Bells of First Baptist Church or to the charity of one’s choice.
