Nixon gazebo to get benches, planters

NIXON — The city of Nixon beautification project continues. Nixon City Council voted to further beautify the city with the addition of three new benches and two new planters to the Nixon gazebo. The benches will cost $1,062 for all three. The cost of the planters is yet to be determined. Nixon Mayor Gladyne Finch is in charge of commissioning the handcrafted planters.

The award of construction contracts for the 4th Street sewer project went to Supak for $131,000. Council approved the award pending a budget amendment for project funding.

In other business, a variance permit was allowed for 12 weeks, to a private citizen on S. Roosevelt Street. The permit allows the resident to reside in a recreational vehicle (RV) while a permanent residence is constructed.

Council voted to draft an ordinance, which will ban vehicle idling in parking lots for longer than five minutes; and, further ban idling between the hours of 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Action was tabled concerning fuel cards for the city’s fire department. Council has asked City Administrator Harold Rice to bring more information on cards and interest rates to next month’s meeting.

Other table items were: switching the city to Zip Link wireless internet services, discussion on the Emergency Medical Services building use, discussion on a possible Nixon Festival, as well as discussion on employee protective equipment.

Nixon City Council meets the second Monday of each month at 5 p.m., at Nixon City Hall, 100 W. 3rd Street.
