NIXON – On Nov. 14, City Council voted to hire Floyd Toliver as the city's interim police chief. The decision was announced after an executive session during that night's monthly meeting.

Toliver, who worked as a deputy sheriff for the Gonzales County Sheriff's Office for over 26 years, will replace interim Chief Justin Solis, who departed on Nov. 13 to work with the Pct. 3 Constable's Office.

“We had gone through lots of applications,” Mayor Gladyne Finch said. “He can sure help us out as an interim chief.”

Toliver, who is retiring from GCSO, said, “I look forward to the change as well as the new opportunity.”

Officials said Toliver's start date has not yet been selected due to administrative in-processing.

In another agenda item, Ernie Paiz, DPS District 17 Disaster Coordinator thought it was important that he introduce himself to the mayor and council during the meeting. Paiz operates out of the Victoria office and explained that his district supports the people of the south central Texas area with emergency preparedness and response activities. It also faces “a variety of hazards and threats including hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, drought and wildfires,” Paiz noted.
