Nixon-Smiley duo advances to area track meet

Nixon-Smiley’s Justice Torres and Jake Torres — both regional qualifiers from last season — will be competing in the area meet after taking top medals at the District 27-3A meet last week.

Justice Torres competing in the 200-meter and 400-meter dash. He took second in the 200-meter with a time of 23.3 seconds and third in the 400-meter with a time of 52.88 seconds.

Jake Torres also competed in the 200-meter and 400-meter dash. He took fourth in the 200-meter with a time of 23.97 seconds, but then placed second in the 400-meter with a time of 51.40 seconds.

Matt Mills also competed in the 200, taking seventh with a time of 24.67 seconds. Mills placed eithth in the long jump.

Other competitors include Modesto Limon placing 11th in the 800-meter run, while Joel Barajas took 12th. In the 1600-meter, Limon placed 14th and Barajas took 15th. Limon also took on the long jump, placed 13th.

On the girls side, Laila Alvarez and Sidney Alvarez who placed ninth and 12th, respectively, in the prelims of the 100-meter dash. Laila also took ninth in the prelims of the 200-meter while Sidney placed 10th in the same race. Annakarina Reyes placed eighth in the 1600-meter run with her time of 7:50.53.
