Nixon-Smiley opens district with two losses

Nixon-Smiley came out the break with two district games, a loss against Luling on Dec. 29 and a loss against Stockdale at home on Jan. 2.

Luling 37, Mustangs 27

Tied 11-11 at the first quarter, the Mustangs were unable to get double-digit scoring in the second and third quarter until finally getting 10 in the fourth, ultimately losing 37-27 to the Luling Eagles.

Leading the team in scoring was Jose Rodriguez with 16 points. Daniel Rodriguez added seven points while Jesse Riojas and Elix Carillo each had two points. The loss dropped Nixon-Smiley to 3-12 overall, 0-1 in District 27-3A.

Stockdale 60, Nixon-Smiley 37

After a tight first half, down only 23-19, the Stockdale Brahmas more than doubled their scoring in the third quarter, outscoring the home Mustangs 24-14, before adding 13 more in the fourth to Nixon-Smiley’s five, besting their rivals 60-37 in the process.

Jason Yell led the team in scoring with 11. Jose Rodriguez added eight, while Daniel Rodriguez and Colby Newman each had six points. Felix Yanes had four points, Elix Carillo had two and Jesse Riojas had one point.

Nixon-Smiley (3-13, 0-2) travel Friday to Yoakum (0-2 in district) to take on the Bulldogs, with tipoff scheduled at 8 p.m. They host Marion on Tuesday with tipoff scheduled at 8 p.m.
