Nixon-Smiley struggles in Shiner tournament

SHINER — The Lady Mustangs struggled to grab a win during their bid in the Shiner Tournament over the weekend as Nixon-Smiley progresses through the early parts of the season this year. The team would lose two sets to none in their three matches on Thursday and two more on Friday.

Stockdale 2, Nixon-Smiley 0

Nixon-Smiley lost (25-14, 25-11) against Stockdale Thursday in a tournament match at the Shiner tournament. Two Lady Mustangs registered kills with Yesenia Limon and Miranda Salinas both getting one. On the serves, Shelby Perez and Courtney Lopez both had an ace. Leading the way in digs was Maggie Mendez with four. Olivia Colon had three while Shelby Perez and Katy Tschoepe had two each.

Nixon-Smiley 0, Shiner 2

The hosts, Shiner Lady Comanches, took down Nixon-Smiley (25-11, 25-14). Tschoepe had a kill in the two-set loss. Leading the way digs was Mendez with three. Limon and Kiara Andrada both had two digs.

Thorndale 2, Nixon-Smiley 0

Nixon-Smiley took their final loss on Thursday against Thorndale, (25-8, 26-13). Both Salinas and Tschoepe each had a kill. Perez lead with two aces while Tschoepe had one ace.

Hallettsville Sacred Heart 2, Nixon-Smiley 0

The Lady Mustangs were bested by Hallettsville Sacred Heart, losing (25-16, 25-15). Perez came away with three kills while Andrada had two and Tschoepe had one. Mendez led the team in aces with three while Tschoepe had one. Leading in digs was Tschoepe with nine, followed by Limon with five. Mendez, Perez, Colon, Andrada and Lopez each had two. Lopez also had four assists.

Flatonia 2, Nixon-Smiley 0

Nixon-Smiley took a two-set loss against Flatonia, (25-18, 25-19). Leading the team in kills were Tschoepe and Perez with four. Mendez and Limon had two aces while Tschoepe had one. Leading in digs were Mendez, Andrade, Lopez and Tschoepe.

Nixon-Smiley hosts Kenedy today, with varsity scheduled to play at 6 p.m.
