Nixon-Smiley’s Newman signs with Ohio college

NIXON — Sometimes the journey to find a best fit for college can take you to a university that’s an 18-hour drive away. That’s where Nixon-Smiley’s Colby Newman found himself when the Mustang quarterback and all-around athlete officially announced his decision to sign with Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

“It felt like home to me and it seemed like the best fit,” Newman said. “It had my degree, which was a big thing to me, I should be able to get decent minutes early and then it was just the best fit for me personally and my family.”

Normally, athletes who sign on National Signing Day in Gonzales County tend to stay close to home, with the furthest athlete reaching Oklahoma in recent history. But Newman decided that MSU would be the best fit and he is looking forward to the opportunities this university may bring him.

As is the case with small schools, Newman played and varsity-lettered in multiple sports, including baseball, football and basketball. Despite growing up a baseball fan, the multi-talented athlete decided that football would be his passion.

“Ever since I was little it was pretty much baseball that I always thought I was going to play in,” he admitted. “Then I started to get introduced as a sophomore [to] football and it kind of helped me find that football was really my passion and my favorite sport out of all three of them.”

The distance may have been a concern at first, but Newman believes that the distance will force him to “grow up” a bit quicker.

“I think I’ll be able to adjust, well, not easily, but at a considerable rate,” he said. “It’ll allow me to find who I am, be out on my own and become independent and mature a lot faster than what I would think if I would stay home.”

“[The distance] concerns me but it’s not a huge deal,” Newman continued. “I just want to be able to find a place where I feel best suits me and allows me to play. As long as I’m playing football, then I won’t have a problem with how far the school is.”

Newman will be studying kinesiology, headed on a pathway to either become a personal trainer or a strength and conditioning coach.

Mount St. Joseph University is a private Catholic co-educational college located at Mount Saint Joseph, near Cincinnati. The Lions compete in NCAA Division III in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
