Nixon’s ‘pocket park’ nears completion

NIXON – As the city's “pocket park” nears completion, officials say it will be ready to host a Thanksgiving Day lighting celebration, a Christmas caroling event for the holidays and other events for springtime.

The park is located on the corner of Third and Nixon Ave. on the main street across from City Hall. Mayor Gladyne Finch said the idea of a small park (hence its name) came to her two years ago, and she formed a committee that presented it to the city council. After about a year, the council approved the plans for the park.

“In the last six months, a gazebo has been built, trees have been donated by Seeligson Tree Farm, town people are making donations to help complete the park and we expect to finish the park before Christmas,” Finch said. “We plan on having a Christmas tree in the park and there will be a lighting celebration with carols sung by the First United Methodist Church on Nov. 24.”

Finch said Jason Montoya of Smiley will be singing Christmas carols at the park on Dec. 10, and that other celebrations will be held as well.

“This will become a gathering place for all kinds of celebrations,” Finch said. “In the spring and fall we plan on having market days when people will bring vegetables, fruits, etc. to sell. Others may bring crafts. We are still needing donations and we are reaching out to anyone who grew up in Nixon, graduated from Nixon, married and lived in Nixon, has relatives in Nixon, etc.”

Finch noted that they still need items such as benches, shrubs, a picnic table, etc. Anyone wishing to contribute is asked to contact City Hall at 830-582-1924 or by mail at 100 W. Third St., Nixon, TX 78140.
