‘No contact’ food drive set for next week

A “Come and Donate It” food drive will take place during the week of May 11 to benefit Gonzales Christian Assistance Ministries in hopes of helping a community affected by COVID-19.

Donation boxes for the “no contact” drop-and-go drive will be located in various businesses and establishments, including the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) parking lot on 426 St. Paul Street. You can drop items off at FUMC on Tuesday, May 12 and Wednesday, May 13 from 4-6 p.m.

Items needed include canned meat products, easy-to-make foods such as ramen or mac-n-cheese, peanut butter and pop top food items.

GCAM is currently asking citizens of the county to not donate clothing and household goods at this time.

“We do want to say thank you for these donations in the past and look forward to being able to accept them again in the future,” the board wrote in a statement sent to the Inquirer. “We do accept food and monetary donations and again, our thanks for this community in continuing to help each other.”

Meanwhile, anyone is welcome to receive food boxes from GCAM outreach location on 708 St. Louis Street. The outreach is open to the public on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9-11 a.m. For pickup, make sure you wear a mask and pop the trunk of your vehicle.
