Parker Clay wins gold at Texas Relays

Gonzales athletes compete at annual state event

AUSTIN — Shiner St. Paul’s Parker Clay earned gold, winning the girls high school shot put event at the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

The senior Lady Cardinal competed in two events at the Texas Relays — girls shot put and discus throw. Clay threw 46 feet, 5 inches on Saturday, good for first place. In the discus throw, she had a distance of 129-9, good for 12th place.

Meanwhile, the Apaches competed in four different events in Austin under the High School Division I group, including boys 100-meter dash, girls 100-meter hurdles, boys 110-meter hurdles and the girls 4x400-meter relay race.

Joshua Branch placed 33rd in preliminaries with a time of 11.66 seconds in the boys 100-meter dash. Juan Jordan took 24th in the preliminaries with a time of 16.26 seconds in the boys 110-meter hurdles.

On the girls side, sophomore Maggie Barnick finished the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 17.49 seconds, good for 33rd. The 4x400-meter relay team of Samantha Barnick, Madison Blundell, Caitlyn Rhoads and Maraia Mathis placed 37th in preliminaries with their time of 4:26.50.

The Apaches traveled to Geronimo to compete in the District 27-4A track meet. The two-day meet began Wednesday, with results unavailable before press time. Top finishers will compete in the area track meet on April 18.
