Living Out Loud

Passing the gravy

Posted

Where did the year go? Here it is just a few days from Thanksgiving and before you know it, Christmas and New Year’s Eve will be upon us. Along with the turkey dinner this Thursday, many of you will take a moment at the dinner table and say what you are most thankful for in front of family and friends. I am most thankful for celebrating three years in remission on the 19th of this month and still I feel blessed to say that even on my worst days that life is better than I deserve.

“I may not be where I want to be but I’m thankful for not being where I used to be” – Habeeb Akande.

I have learned there is a certain responsibility that comes with feeling so blessed. I am not lucky, I just am expected to do something with the grace and gratitude I’ve been given. And I need to remind you, the readers, that includes you. Gratitude turns what we may see as very little into having enough, it can turn a simple meal into a feast when shared with others and it turns a house into a home. Look around you this Thanksgiving, among the stuffing, green bean casserole and pumpkin pie is hopefully a face looking back at you, smiling. This person is glad to see you even if just for a few hours. I love the feeling of someone making me smile. It’s a wonderful thing to see yourself in another’s eyes, being appreciated for something you did or maybe just making them laugh when they didn’t think it was ever possible.

“The Law condemns the best of us; but Grace saves the worst of us” – Joseph Prince

Yes, I have to include being thankful for football. I am The Fan of my beloved Dallas Cowboys since 1972. Every Thanksgiving day since 1978, the Dallas Cowboys take to the field play. It has been a tradition for me watching my beloved team play while usually enjoying another plate of stuffing and mashed potatoes covered in gravy. Even if my team loses, I will be surrounded by a few people that I will be thankful for and maybe make a few more. Hello, friend, how about them Cowboys and pass the gravy, please.
