Policing for profit

Posted

I’m writing this letter to the editor to inform people of the “Policing for Profit” policy that is going on in our community. How many people have been unfairly “targeted” and pulled over because of the way they dress or the way they look or the car they drive in? This is called racial profiling and it’s against the law. Certain officers in our community are pulling minority citizens over and claiming someone called in on them swerving or when you’re pulled over for a minor traffic violation, you’re subjected to a search of their person and their vehicles. This is a form of intimidation and harassment that must end. It also seems like every year around Come and Take It they bust into a minority citizen’s home under the pretense that someone is doing something illegal but never find what they are searching for but end up taking property such as cash and other valuables, seize vehicles and in some cases where found to have done it illegally and were forced to return the proper they seized “illegally.” This form of enriching themselves under the color of “authority” must end.

Citizens, I urge you if you have been a victim of racial profiling or harassment, go file a complaint against the officers. That way, it is documented. Post your grievances on social media and let’s end this discriminatory practice of daily civil violations by the people who are supposed to protect and serve us.
