Rebuilding Eagles off to slow start

It took Luling some time to get there, but the Lady Eagles made the last two sets competitive in what ultimately was a three-set loss (25-6, 25-18, 25-20) against the visiting Schertz John Paul II Guardians.
Head coach Sunny DeCamp described the loss as something that happens every year, where the team tends to start off slow, especially during their home openers.
“They finally warmed up a little bit,” DeCamp said of the last two sets. “This is their first home game. It’s definitely a rebuilding year for us, we lost a couple of really strong players as seniors last year. We started off a little slow, we had a good tournament this last weekend, ended on a good note on Saturday, so I was hoping that would drive us [Tuesday]. I just think it’s kind of those first home game jitters. Since I’ve been here, that’s kind of common denominator, every time our first home game comes around, it’s like they don’t play the way they can. And John Paul is a good team too, I don’t know if we were quite expecting that. There are a lot of things we’re still working at.”
After scoring just six points in the first set, the Lady Eagles kept things close in the second set, staying within three down 9-6 before the Guardians went on a run to eventually go up 22-12.
The third set was much closer with Luling taking a 3-2 lead and maintaining that lead up until they were up 20-16. The Guardians would close out the third seat on a 9-0 run to beat Luling 25-20.
The Lady Eagles are scheduled to travel to Floresville for a tournament this weekend and then host Gonzales on Tuesday, with a game set at 6 p.m.
