Rose Vasquez Moreno, 91, of Gonzales passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Gonzales Memorial Hospital in Gonzales.

Funeral mass is under the direction of Buffington Funeral Home in Gonzales and will be held on Wednesday, March 9 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gonzales with Father Paul Raaz officiating. Interment will follow at Saint James Catholic Cemetery. A rosary will be recited on Tuesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. at the Buffington Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon John Moreno officiating.

Rose was born on April 21, 1924 in Shiner. She was the daughter of Julius and Mercedes (DeLe Santos) Vasquez. Rose started helping her family when she was only 6 years old by picking 100 pounds of cotton each day. She married Gavino Moreno on Oct. 8, 1948 in the community of Little New York.  

When Rose was old enough, she worked at the Gonzales Hospital as a CNA. She did this for 40 years and then retired. After her retirement, she became a private duty caregiver, caring for many who were younger than she was.

Rose finally retired in 2001 and became the traveling companion of her daughter, Dora. They traveled to Mexico, Memphis, New Mexico and even Canada. One of her favorite places to visit was the Basilica of San Juan in McAllen.

She never failed to tell her family how much she loved them. Rose enjoyed caring for her flower and vegetable gardens, and doing yardwork. Rose liked to sew and crochet. She was always making house slippers for her family.

Rose is survived by sons, Guadalupe Moreno and his wife, Brenda of Memphis, Tenn., Gavino Moreno, Jr. and his wife, Liz of Wharton, John Moreno and his wife, Diana of Smiley, David Moreno and his wife, Katherine Young of Austin, Richard Moreno of Gonzales; sisters, Alice Dietrich of San Antonio, Mary Sanchez of Sugarland; 22 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Julius and Mercedes Vasquez; husband, Gavino Vasquez; daughter, Dora Ann Morris; brothers, Julius Vasquez, William Vasquez, Santiago Vasquez; sister, Beatrice Vasquez and one great-grandson, Clifton Majors.

Pallbearers are Michael Moreno, Patrick Moreno, Chris Moreno, Gabriel Moreno, TJ Deberry and Howard Morris. Honorary pallbearers are Christopher Bone and Christifer Camarillo.
