School board elections canceled

Officials with Gonzales, Nixon-Smiley and Waelder school districts reported that this year's elections have been canceled because all board members are running unopposed.

For GISD, officials reported that incumbents Ross Hendershot III (Dist. 5), Glen Menking (Dist. 3) and Sue Gottwald's (Dist. 6) seats are up and will be running for re-election. Board members Gloria Torres, Justin Schwaeusch, Josie Smith-Wright and Tom Lester's terms are not up until May 2018.

For NSCISD, Clay Allen's seat is up; and other board members Bud Box, Richard Lott, Mark Mendez, Lester Warzecha, Jimmy Newman and Cathy Lauer are not up until the 2018 election. William Griffin and Maria Griffin (no relation) signed up to replace former board member Jake Robinson, who left in December. Only one of those two (William Griffin) signed up to also run in May. The school board can appoint Maria Griffin and she would serve a month, and then be off because she did not also apply to run. William Griffin will be added after the election date since he is the only one running.

Waelder ISD officials announced that board members Dora Noyola and Diana Olmos are up for re-election, while Troy Sullivan, Dennis Goode, Joann Ibarra, Cathy Hernandez and Avery Williams are not up until the 2018 election.
