Shiner St. Paul track teams take first at district meet

HALLETTSVILLE — The boys’ and girls’ track teams at Shiner St. Paul had much success at the TAPPS 2A District 3 Meet last week as the boys’ team scored a total of 147 points to take first, edging out Hallettsville Sacred Heart who had 127 points. The Lady Cardinals dominated the meet with a whopping 234 points, beating out Veritas Academy who took second with just 82 points.

Top four athletes in each event advanced to the regional meet that will take place in Hallettsville on April 30.

Three individual boys’ athletes took home gold medals for Shiner St. Paul.

Austin Barton came away with one of them, taking first in the 400-meter race with his time of 52.89 seconds. Barton also took fourth in the 200-meter with his time of 23.84 and in the shot put with his distance of 40 feet, 8 inches.

Colton Machart took second in the shot put with his toss of 43-2. Machart came away with a bronze in the discus toss with his distance of 111-9.

Derek Kapavik was another gold medalist, taking first in the 300-meter hurdle with his time of 41. 68. Alex Hull took fifth in the same competition with his time of 46.52. Meanwhile, Kapavik also came home with a silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 16.82. Patrick Green would take fifth in the same race, finishing at 19.89.

Finally, Lane Johnson was the big winner with two gold medals as an individual, taking first in the 1600-meter run with his time of 5:04.7 and first in the 3200-meter with his time of 11:08.9.

Nathan Wagner took sixth in the 800-meter with his time of 2:15.1 and fifth in the 1600-meter with his time of 5:16.0.

As a team, the 4x400-meter relay squad of Derek Kapavik, Jed Janecek, TJ Bell and Austin Barton came away with a gold medal, finishing at 3:37.29. The 4x100-meter relay team of Janecek, Ryan Bell, Tre Perry and TJ Bell took second with their time of 45.99 while the 4x200-meter relay team of Janecek, Ryan Bell, Perry and TJ Bell took second with their time of 1:35.9

Ryan Bell was another medalist who took home a silver with his triple jump distance of 40-6 ½. Conor Kresta took sixth in the competition with his distance of 37-1 ½.

Janecek was the other regional finalist for the Cardinals, taking fourth in the pole vault with his distance of 9-6. Other top athletes include Josh Haynes and Eudosio Garza who took fifth and sixth with their jumps of 8-6 and 8-6, respectively, in pole vaulting.

In the high jump, River Haynes took sixth with his distance of 5-4. TJ Bell took sixth in the long jump with his distance of 18-7 ¼.

On the girls’ side, four Lady Cardinals came away with gold medals at the meet.

Emma Morgan was one of the top competitors as she took two first place finishes.

Morgan was on top in the 1600-meter race with her time of 6:10.1. Ashley Wachsmuth took third in the event with her time of 6:20.3. Morgan also took first in the pole vaulting with her leap of 7-6. Natalie Jackson took fourth with her leap of 7 feet and Vanessa Squyres sixth with her leap of 6 feet.

Jackson also came away with a gold medal, placing first in the 800-meter with her time of 2:27.5. Lillie Bell placed fourth in the same race with her finish of 2:38.5. Jackson also took fifth in the 400-meter run with her time of 1:06. Bell placed sixth in the same race with her time of 1:07.7.

Parker Clay took home two first place spots, getting a gold medal in the discuss throw with her toss of 115-5. Ashlyn Patek took second in the same event with her toss of 99-5. Clay also took first in the shot put with her distance of 36-8. Ashlyn Patek took second in the shot put while Christine Wagner took fourth with their toss measured at 34-5 ½ and 29-7 ¾, respectively.

Grace Irvin also had top finishes including a gold medal in the triple jump with her distance of 33 feet. Delynn Pesek placed third in the same event with her distance of 32-4 ½. Meanwhile, Alexis Cantu took fourth with a distance of 31-8 ¾.

Cantu also took second in the long jump with her leap at 15-9 ¾. She placed fourth in the 200-meter with her time of 28.67. Emma Hull took fifth in the race, getting barely edged out with her time of 28.68.

Irvin finished with two more medals besides her gold. She took second in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 18.33. Riley Johnson took third with her time of 18.82 and Tiffany Thomas fifth with her time of 19.17. Irvin then finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with her time of 52.02. Johnson took third with her time of 54.02 and Thomas took fourth with her time of 54.7.

Ashley Wachsmuth, who already took third in the 1600-meter also took second in the 3200-meter race with her time of 13:50.5.

At the high jump, Jordan Pawelek took second with her jump of 4-10 while Gracey Novosad took third with her jump of 4-8.

At the relays, the 4x100-meter team took first with their time of 53.11, the 4x200-meter relay team took first with their time of 1:52.4 and the 4x400-meter relay team took second with their time of 4:20.4.

Top four competitors head to Hallettsville on April 30 for the regional meet.
