Sisters on the Fly promotional signs bought

The Gonzales Convention and Visitors Bureau (GCVB) board of directors voted to allocate up to $2,500 in funding for signs welcoming the Sisters on the Fly to Gonzales. Calling itself the “largest women’s social organization in the United States,” Sisters on the Fly is a women’s adventure group with only one rule: “no men, no kids, be nice and have fun.”

The sisters are planning to venture down to Gonzales the week of Sept. 28 through Oct. 6. Roughly 650 women in campers will descend upon Gonzales for a week of outdoor adventure that coincides the city’s Come and Take It Celebration. 

The signage, which simply says “Welcome Sisters on the Fly,” was originally meant to be placed in the windows of downtown businesses to promote shopping and dining, however the GCVB opted to place the signs not only downtown, but all over the city.

• Minutes from the July 18 meeting were approved.
• J.B. Wells and Main Street reports were read.
• GCVB will be involved in two upcoming Texas history events: One on March 1 and one of October 12. 
• Reports were read on several upcoming events.
• Financial reports were read and accepted as is.
• GCVB discussed several 2020 goals including purchasing signage on the electronic billboard on the corner of Highway 183 and Saint Lawrence St., as well as wayside signage on Water St. 
• No updates were provided on the murals project.
• Gonzales Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center’s application for hotel occupancy tax funding was accepted.
• GCVB opted to table discussions on purchasing a tourism van for the time being. 
• City of Gonzales advertising was purchased for several Texas magazines. 
• The next GCVB meeting is set for 1 p.m. on Sept. 19.
