Snake hunting causes lockdown scare at Nixon-Smiley Elementary

A Smiley man’s snake woes caused Nixon-Smiley Elementary to go on lockdown Wednesday morning. At around 8:30 a.m. May 29, authorities received notice of shots fired two blocks from the elementary school. The school was subsequently placed on lockdown.

Shortly after, the man alerted the sheriff’s office what had happened. According to school authorities, the man saw a snake in his yard and initially tried to kill it with a shovel. However, the snake lodged itself in a crevasse and the man responded by firing into the hole. Lockdown was lifted at 8:45 a.m.
