Mustangs overwhelm Pettus in home opener

The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs (1-0) scored 26 first-half points to overwhelm Pettus (0-1) last Friday night in their 34-0 victory. Jesse Riojas led the team on offense, rushing 12 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Dario Jantes rushed five times for 44 yards and a score. Quarterback Xavier Arias rushed nine times for 39 yards and was 1-of-3 passing, an 18-yard touchdown to Chris Brown. Defensively, Mateo Abrego forced a fumble and came away with 1.5 sacks. Austin McMain recovered a fumble. Bradyn Martinez came away with an interception.

The Mustangs travel to take on George West (1-0) on Friday, a team with playoff aspirations. Last season, George West bested Nixon-Smiley 72-12.

State-ranked Comanches ready for next test

The #2 Shiner Comanches took down Hallettsville 55-20 last Friday. The Comanches host Vanderbilt Industrial (1-0) on Friday for their first home game of the season. Industrial comes off a 47-20 win over Mathis. Last season, Shiner won the game 14-0. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Luling Eagles to face tough Llano team

The Luling Eagles lost 31-13 against Marion last Friday, dropping their home opener. This Friday, Luling travels to Llano (1-0) who comes off a 33-0 victory over Hondo. Last season, Llano beat Luling 36-12.

Lady Eagles split games

Luling lost in three sets to Lockhart last Friday (25-7, 25-16, 25-15) then swept Kenedy on Tuesday (25-19, 25-12, 25-14) to split their last two games.

Against Lockhart, Aja Holmes led the team in kills with nine. She also led the team with eight solo blocks and two assisted blocks. Holmes also led the team in kills against Kenedy with 15. Norianne Monigold led the team in blocks with five solos and one assisted. Tara Hajovsky had five solo blocks and Holmes had three solo and two assisted blocks. Holmes also led with two assists, while Jazmin Loya had one.

The Lady Eagles host Rice Consolidate on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. game before traveling to Smithville on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. match.

Lady Comanches dropped in 3

Shiner traveled to Schulenburg, losing to the Shorthorns (25-14, 25-11, 25-11). The Lady Comanches host El Campo on Friday with a 4:30 p.m. game, then host Flatonia on Tuesday, Sept. 10 for a 7 p.m. game.

Lady Cardinals swept at home

Shiner St. Paul lost in three sets to Yorktown last Friday, (25-21, 25-15, 25-23). The Lady Cardinals travel to participate in the San Antonio Castle Hills Tournament this weekend, then host La Grange on Tuesday, Sept. 10 for a 7 p.m. game.
