Five Apaches named to academic all-state team

Five Gonzales Apache football players were named to the academic all-state team. Diego Diaz de Leon, Dominic Anzaldua and Heath Henke were named to the first team. Frank Benes was named to the second team. Lion Williamson was honorably mentioned.

Shiner junior named to all-state team

Shiner’s Kiley Michalec, a junior, was named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 1A all-state team. Athletes are nominated by member coaches of TGCA, then selected by the TGCA All-State committee. The committee may select up to 50 athletes per conference for all-state honors.

Waelder boys ranked

The Waelder Wildcat boys basketball team made their debut appearance on the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 1A top 25 list this Monday. The Wildcats are currently ranked 25th in the state, according to TABC. Also ranked are Moulton at 18 and Dime Box at 24. Both schools are in Waelder’s district.

Mustangs finish 3rd in Nordheim tournament

The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs won two of their three tournament games in Nordheim last weekend to take third place. Nixon-Smiley beat the Flatonia JV team 39-33 before losing 93-39 against the Flatonia varsity squad. In their final game of the tournament, the Mustangs knocked off Prairie Lea 64-56.

After the tournament, the Mustangs hosted Hallettsville Sacred Heart on Tuesday, beating the Indians 55-36. The team is now 4-2 overall.

Lady Cardinals lose to rivals

Shiner St. Paul lost 46-40 to their rivals, the Hallettsville Sacred Heart Indianettes, on Tuesday. Rebecca Wagner led the team in scoring with 12 points adding three rebounds, one block and 11 steals to the state book. Paige Brown had five points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Julianna Davis scored seven points off the bench.

St. Paul travels to Fayetteville for tournament play this weekend. Next weekend they travel to Falls City for a tournament before the Christmas break.

Gonzales knocks off non-district opponent

On Tuesday, the Gonzales Apaches took down Canyon Lake on the road 50-43. They host a tournament this weekend before hosting Wimberley for a non-district game on Tuesday, Dec. 17. That game is set to take place at 6:15 p.m.

#25 Wildcats overwhelms state-ranked Flatonia

The Waelder Wildcats, currently ranked 25th in Class 1A, beat Flatonia 63-39 at home on Tuesday. Flatonia is currently ranked 15th in Class 2A.

Luling splits non-district games

The Luling Eagles beat Class 4A Navarro 72-52 last Friday before losing to Comfort on the road on Tuesday 72-55. The Eagles travel to Moulton for a tournament this weekend, then travel to Marion next Tuesday for a non-district game.

Lady Eagles squeak by Lexington

The Luling Lady Eagles won 38-37 against Lexington at home on Tuesday. They travel to Flatonia for a tournament this weekend before hosting San Antonio FEAST Home School on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

Comanches lose on the road

Shiner lost 51-24 against Industrial on the road in boys basketball. The Comanches ravel to Fayetteville this weekend for a tournament before hosting Austwell-Tivoili on Monday, Dec. 16 for a 5:30 p.m. game.
