Apaches open district with two wins

The Gonzales Apaches opened district with a 4-1 victory over La Vernia last Friday. Antonio Hernandez scored two points while Adrian Rodriguez and Daniel Cruz each had one. The Apaches then beat Yoakum 9-0 on Tuesday with Cruz scoring four goals, Rodriguez scoring two goals, Jorge Cervantes scoring two goals and Antonio Hernandez scoring one goal. Gonzales (2-0) hosts Pleasanton (2-0) to take on the Eagles for a 7 p.m. game before traveling to La Vernia on Tuesday, March 3 for a 7 p.m. game.

Lady Apaches split district games

The Gonzales Lady Apaches opened district play last Friday with a 2-0 loss to La Vernia. They then beat Yoakum 3-0 to move to 1-1 in district on Tuesday. Gonzales travels to Pleasanton (2-0) to take on the Lady Eagles at 5 p.m. before hosting La Vernia on Tuesday, March 3 at 5 p.m.

Apache golfer takes first at tournament

Gonzales Apache golfer Mason Richter shot a 71, one under par, at the Blanco Panther Invitational at Valaar Creek on Monday, to win the tournament by two strokes. The win is a continuation of Richter’s early season success, with his fourth-place finish last week at the NISD tournament in Concan where he shot 76 and 79 to total 155 strokes in the two-day tournament.

Lady Apaches softball season begins

The Lady Apaches began their softball season, losing close last weekend to Yoakum 17-13 and Bay City 9-7 before blowing out Bloomington 15-0. Gonzales then lost 13-5 against Buda Johnson on Tuesday. The team is expected to be at full strength soon with the basketball season ending. Gonzales travels to Poth on Friday with a game at 6:30 p.m.

Luling boys, girls ousted from the playoffs

The Luling Eagles boys and girls team were eliminated from the playoffs after both teams lost to Schulenburg on Tuesday. The boys team lost 59-58 while the girls lost 58-50. The boys end their season as District 27-3A champions and bi-district finalists while the girls end their season as District 27-3A co-champions, bi-district champions and area round finalists.

Lady Comanches continue deep playoff run

The Shiner Lady Comanches advanced to the Region IV-2A semifinals after beating Flatonia 38-23 on Tuesday. Shiner takes on San Saba at San Marcos on Friday, with tipoff set for 6 p.m. The winner faces the winner between Mason and Weimar in the Region IV-2A finals on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. that day.

Waelder Wildcats ready for playoff run

The now ranked #4 Waelder Wildcats begin their playoff run on Friday with an area round game against Leakey. The game is scheduled to take place at Johnson City, with tipoff set for 8 p.m. The Wildcats come off an impressive playoff-warmup victory over Slidell last week. The 69-61 win for Waelder launched the team to the top four in Class 1A.

Shiner St. Paul eliminated in the regional round

The Shiner St. Paul Lady Cardinals were eliminated from the playoffs after losing 52-30 against Austin Waldorf in the regional round. The team ends their season with a third-round exit and a district championship.
