St. Paul earn back-to-back track titles

WACO — Shiner St. Paul continued their winning ways as both the boys’ and girls’ track and field teams took home state titles at the TAPPS 2A state track and field meet in Waco last weekend.

The girls’ team dominated, scoring 152 total points, almost doubling Canterbury Episcopal who took second with a score of 77. Rosehill Christian took third at 67 points.

State champion medalists for the Lady Cardinals include Parker Clay who took first in shot put with her toss of 37 feet, 4 ½ inches. She also took second in the discus toss with her distance of 114-10. Also competing in the shot put was Ashlyn Patek who took fourth with her distance of 34-10 ¼. Christine Wagner placed seventh with her toss of 31-1. Meanwhile in the discus, Patek took fourth with her toss of 102-8.

Emma Morgan also became a state champion taking first in pole vault with her jump of 8-6. Natalie Jackson took second in the same event with her jump of 7-6.

Jackson came away with a silver medal in the 800-meter run with her time of 2 minutes, 25.28 seconds. Lillie Bell was sixth in the same race, timed at 2:36.59.

In other race events, Alexis Cantu took seventh with her time of 28.73 seconds. Emma Morgan took fifth in the 1600-meter with her time of 6:00.32. Ashley Wachsmuth was seventh in the 3200-meter, timed at 14:07.80. At the hurdles, Grace Irvin took fifth with her time of 17.61. Riley Johnson was seventh in the same race, 18.21 seconds. In the 300-meter hurdles, Irvin took sixth with her time of 52.97 seconds, Johnson was seventh with her time of 53.43 and Tiffany Thomas was eighth with her time of 54.45.

All three relay teams took second place at the track meet. The 4x100-meter relay team of Alexis Cantu, Emma Hull, Gracey Novosad and Elyssa Wagner were timed at 52.37 seconds. Meanwhile the 4x200-meter team of Alexis Cantu, Hope Kapavik, Grace Irvin and Elyssa Wagner were timed at 1:52.10. The 4x400-meter team of Riley Johnson, Hope Kapavik, Natalie Jackson and Elyssa Wagner were timed at 4:19.19.

At the high jump, Jordan Pawelek took fourth with her distance of 4-10. Gracey Novosad took fifth with her distance of 4-10.

Alexis Cantu came home with a silver medal with her long jump distance of 15-7 ¾. In the triple jump, Grace Irvin took fourth with her jump of 34 feet and Delynn Pesek was sixth with her jump of 32-7.

On the boys’ side, one relay team took gold while four individual athletes came away with silver and bronze medals at the meet, leading the Cardinals to another state track and field title.

The 4x400-meter team of Derek Kapavik, Ryan Bell, T.J. Bell and Austin Barton took first place with their time of 3:34.48. The team of Jed Janecek, Ryan Bell, Tre’Zelle Perry and T.J. Bell took sixth in both the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay races with their time of 46.05 seconds and 1:36.38, respectively.

Austin Barton took second place in the 400-meter race with his time of 52.45 seconds. He also took seventh in the 200-meter as he clocked in at 23.84.

In the long distance races, Lane Jackson took second with his time of 4:53.15 in the 1600-meter and eighth in the 3200-meter with his time of 10:43.39.

Derek Kapavik had two individual medals, taking second in the 110-meter hurdles and third in the 300-meter hurdles with his times of 16 seconds and 42.62 seconds, respectively.

Colton Machart had St. Paul’s final medal as he took second in the shot put with his toss of 46-6 ¼. Barton also participated, taking seventh with his toss of 40-0 ¼. Meanwhile, Machart also took fifth in the discus toss, getting 117-4.

In the pole vault event, Jed Janecek took seventh with his distance of 10 feet. Ryan Bell took sixth in the triple jump with his distance of 40-7 ¼.

Shiner St. Paul won the track meet for boys’ and girls’ in the 2015 season as well.
