Stanley Ray Cowey, 81, of Gonzales passed away Monday, Jan. 30.

He was born May 8, 1935 in Dewville, Texas the son of James Stephen and Martha Emma Click Cowey. He served in the U.S. Army. He married Shirley Pape on December 15, 1956 at the Assembly of God Church in Nixon.

After Ray’s military service, he attended barber college in El Paso, Texas. He was a longtime barber in Gonzales and owned Cowey’s Barber Shop from January 1963 until his retirement in May 2015. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping hogs. Along with his barber shop he also raised cattle.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Shirley Cowey of Gonzales; daughter Sherry Whitton and husband Russell of Kerrville; grandchildren: Sarah Whitton, Tanner Whitton, Hunter Whitton, Courtney Whitton, Russell Whitton Jr. and Britney Balderas; sisters: Margie Moore of Alabama and Joyce Pierpont of Smiley; brothers: Lee Cowey of Nixon, Charles Cowey of Jones Creek and V.C. Cowey of Weesatche.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James H. “Buddy” Cowey and an infant brother. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3 at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with Reverend Gary Irwin officiating. Interment will follow at the Dewville Cemetery. Pallbearers include Tanner Whitton, Juan Balderas, Jimmy Barnick, Russell Whitton Sr., Jay Jackson and Jeremy Swick. Arrangements under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home, Gonzales.
