WAELDER WILDCATS

State-ranked Moulton too much for Lady Cats

WAELDER — If the running clock in the first quarter wasn’t an indication of what’s to come, the 27-0 first quarter run by Moulton was more than enough to show that the five-player Waelder Lady Wildcats team could not compete against the 11th ranked team in Class 1A. Waelder would lose this District 30-1A competition 54-11.

Waelder’s first score came with 1:20 left in the first quarter, two made free throws by Fatima Torres. It wasn’t until late in the third quarter when Waelder scored again, a three-point made by sophomore Jakhia Thompson. Thompson led the team in scoring, making another three early in the fourth to bring her total to six points.

Early on, the Moulton Kittens used their stifling full-court press to get in the face of the Lady Wildcats and force turnovers which led to easy buckets and a 27-0 advantage. Moulton backed off for the rest of the game, but their half-court pressure was also too much to handle for Waelder who would score just two field goals the entire game.

The Lady Wildcats travel to take on Fayetteville on Friday, then host McDade on Tuesday, Feb. 5.
