Living Out Loud

Take it while it's hot!

"Summertime is always the best of what might be" - Charles Bowden
As May is at its halfway mark, we in Texas start our summer and summertime in Texas is an experience. Summers in Texas seem to last between May and finally seem to end in September. So if you’re anything like me, for the next few months you’ll be a sweaty, melting mess, no matter how many showers you take and evenings turn into the mosquito fest, so I end up smelling more like Deep Woods Off insect repellent than Bath & Body. But I do actually love the Texas summer season.
I love the fact the days of summer seem longer and something about the evenings remind me of being at the top of Ferris wheel at a county fair. It’s the slight pause before the wheel begins to bring me down and gives me that feeling of youth enteral. The Texas sun starts to set but slowly still giving off warm rays and allowing you to absorb the last of its power as it finally sinks into the tips of the horizon. It seems to challenge me, like since I made it this far, I will be rewarded with a dawn that only the Heavens can create tomorrow. Summers in Texas also mark time for berry picking and who doesn’t like a dish of fresh blackberry or blueberry cobbler fresh from the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top!
Summer seems to encourage us all to slow down, sit a spell under a shady tree and chilled beverages. It’s about tire swings in the evenings and fishing at all hours. Summer is about beaches, walking barefoot on the sand and listening to the waves and the whispers of the world as the tide comes in and out. And who can forget America’s favorite past-time, baseball. Sitting in the stands, with the warm summer sun on my shoulders and a hotdog in my hand covered in mustard and relish, as a fastball meets the catcher’s glove or, even better, hitting the bat.
Summertime is more than a combination of particularly hot and sunny weather patterns; it’s a state of mind, another season of our lives, a fresh way of looking at things, and a time for adventure, laziness, discovery, and wonderment. So stop rushing through life and be amazed how much more life you have time for.
“Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, Drink the wild air’s salubrity” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
